Dubstep takeover?

I saw Bassnectar at Sonic Bloom in Winter Park ,CO last month.. and I was sad to hear the set was mostly dubstep. My heart sank and I waited for the next DJ to come on... after trying hard to dance but being unable to really feel any magic in it. Just boom, boom, gloomm, vrooom, boom.

I remember the same feeling when drum-and-bass started getting played in the chill rooms of rave parties, rather than ambient or trip-hop. Some people were like "wow!" and other people think it's just inferior, more urban, lower vibration music.

Yeah, I know Lorin plays all types of tunes (I've heard The Cure, Shpongle remixes, swing, hip hop) and over the years he's had wicked taste....but I definitely dig the faster, cleaner breakbeat sound much, much more than dubstep and glitch shizit. I find it easier to dance, too.

What do you think? What are your feelings on dubstep sets at the peak slot of parties?

Cant figure out though where Sunrise on Sunday will be.

We’ve got a new little bootleg for your ear drummmmms this week! It’s a mish-mash of components and it’s on the downtempo side of things…

From Lorin: “I took the beat of a long-overdue unreleased tune called “Stretch Reflex” and melted it together with the synths and melodies from another song that was supposed to be on Underground Communication, but ended up getting saved for later. It was written as a pensive homage to the dead, the original melodics sound like a black metal song but in this version they have kind of a nice 1990’s Orb or FSOL feel to them…that sound will never get old for me! Then i took some of the prettier melodies from that song and mixed them with a Lupe Fiasco acapella (i looooove his voice) and it became one of my favorite tunes to close a party with.

So this week we give to you ‘Land of the Lupes’ which is the working title of this goofily random combination of sounds, and an unrelated homage to one of my favorite bands in the world, Land of the Loops. It will most likely be included as an instrumental on the upcoming album this fall, and that “Stretch Reflex” beat will most likely be released on my website as a DJ Tools & Loops collection.”

About Good Times festival
The festival started in Jerome, Arizona in 2007. Primarily as a benefit show, for the Jerome Kids Art Workshop. Founded by Cameron McWilliams, Jesse Kennan and Sean Barbis. The event doubled in size, from 2007 to 2008. Good Times quickly out grew the original home at Gold King Mine. The Owner of the land decided he wanted to quiet things down. We at the festival respected that decision and decided to look for a larger home for this great event. Ok, so i'm not one to normally nitpick on people..but check it out...

I just wanted to say that the pricing structure for seeing Bassnectar (and many other artists) is getting reckless and prohibitive.

I just went to purchase a ticket for Bassnectar at the crystal ballroom in Portland. The ticket price is 20 bucks, fine. Ticketmaster, charges 60% of the cost of the ticket in “convenience fees” and “processing fees” Topping the final price out at something like 33 dollars!!!! . The irony of that phrase “Convenience fees” I don’t find getting charged more than half the cost of my ticket just to make the purchase “convenient” . I’m sure if Lorin had any idea his fans were getting DICKED this hard, he wouldn’t bother performing…33 bucks for a live performance…get real, I can buy 3-4 albums with that much. This practice is becoming standard. I guess middle - upper class folks rolling in dough is his 'target audience'. This kind of pricing makes me think that, especially with a rising jobless rate and faulting economy.

Anyway, If I knew Lorin was comfortable with bankrupting his fans so they can see his performance I probably wouldn’t bother seeing him. What irony that he seems to have become the very thing he so staunchly criticizes - capitalistic swine gutting every consumer he can find…shame on Bassnectar’s booking team, and shame on ticketmaster. Evidently greed is the most important thing for this artist. I'm not saying the guys an asshole - he does plenty of good things too - but c'mon, who are you kidding. Hmm, bassnectar for a couple hours one night, or 6 meals...hmmm?

So much to catch up on, to start off, some exciting new festival dates have been announced, most recently Lollapalooza and Austin City Limits! We are cross eyed with delight for those, but can't barely even think of it yet cuz May is comes first. Gotta make it through May

We have a full on month ahead, all wrapped up around the new single Art of Revolution....so where to begin:

1. NEW WEBSITE!
www.bassnectar.net has received a face lift...it has been in live testing for the past 2 weeks, and is about halfway home in terms of the back end networking which Darling Daysha is developing as i type this. (THANK YOU DAYSHA!!!!) But the site is rad, there are lots of little nooks and corridors, and lots of streamable and downloadable music.

Also there is a new digital music store (you can buy AOR before its even "out") that will begin being stocked with Amorphous Music in the coming months.

Perhaps most exciting is that this little doozy of a site can kind of merge all the different online networks (myspace, facebook, etc etc) and we are looking to build a community on the site, so please stop by leave a comment, and say whats up. It is SUPER DUPER KEY that you sign up on the email list, because a lot of the new music is going to be released direct on the site, through direct email blasts, no spam of course, TOTAL RESPECT, but we wanna be in complete touch with YOU.

first time wobble

first time I saw Lorin was at Camp Bisco '08. I was like "man that thin dude has long freakin' hair, what is this about- is he a hippy? He said "I'm just like a kid in a candy store- I can't wait to rage it with you guys!" He toasted the crowd with what looked like a very large bottle of JD and took a swig. A storm (litterally) was brewing. Chicks were getting wet. (!!) I had the feeling this set was going to be unusual.

It's like my jaw dropped. I couldn't make sense out of this- it was like the music was 100% profound but at the same time 100% *FUN*. ...Something about the undeniable ART side of the music and the PARTY element being perfectly, symmetrically fused into one organic thing. The mairrage of spaztic, wacky hiphop party energy and electronica psychic frequency expansion--- It takes you far out and puts your feet on the ground at the same time, if you know what I mean.... This paradox goes for the politics vs. party debate too- some say he should let the bass speak for itself, some care most about his blatant critique of babylon which he'll take a minute for even if it means missing a beat. How crucial were the few missing beats anyway? I voted for the first time in my life in part because he made the crowd pledge to at another show....... Unfortunately I made a Royal Wanker of myself meeting him for a second afterwords because it took about all the dignity I could muster not to offer my girlfriend to him hahah. ("stupid fanboy!!" I say to himself ) seriously, when an artist makes you feel they are "one of us" that's rare- why repay the gift by turning them into a God- I have a hunch Lorin wouldn't enjoy that anyway.

Funny story-- in that first set he just fuckin STOPPED- silence. and he got on the mic and said "I just killed a fly with my crossfader. that never happened to me before" That was probably the single weirdest moment of my life. Not cuz I was "on something", either. (?) It was the way he had no hesitation to stop the "unstoppable" beat just to point out a funny, trivial coincidense that was just..... weird. For one thing I didn't know DJs were "allowed" to just turn it off... but why not? that was the moment of zen thing for me... mostly it was the tone of voice when he mentioned the fly- it was so casual, like he was talking to his buds on the couch next to him rather than on stage in front of a zillion fans. And unless I imagined it there was a barely detectabley sincere "sorry" empathy toward the fly when he mentioned it.....touching. for real.

.............anyway I am spinning at my 6th gig next month (but c'mon all you lot use more vinyl and less laptop yo!!) Who do you think gave me the thought "hey, i could do this!" thank you.

Hopefully they will sign him up in the coming month, I know I will at least be sharing my opinion through any possible contacts involved with the festival. I also know that I am not the only one who feels like he NEEDS to be there so I suggest maybe writing Rothbury an e-mail just to be heard. Couldn't hurt to try.

after posing shirtless on a rooftop with 4 BB gun rifles and a bike helmet for a cellphone photo shoot, i had the fortune to live vicariously by looking downward into the neighbor's green lawn. I spent a few moments overlooking 3 mexican kids on an easter egg hunt, listening to their gorgeous voices and nostalgically feeling the mystique and excitement of my own lost childhood.

Later, after eating plantains, i went to the flea market and stopped to take a picture with this random woman, who was trying to sell cheap kitchen cutlery.

i nicknamed her several things, most accurately Esmerelda Javier Fernandez.

The music matters massive (known in underground gear circles as M3) is transforming the Athens Arena into vibrating bassline fun-house to acheive MELTDOWN after the 3rd and final set of the sound tribe boyz @ their sold out theatre runnnn.

with it a string of tour dates and coinciding projects. The Wobble
Factory will be providing custom-built PK-Sound System enhancements for
larger than life audio, and we are working with a community of
activists to generate involvement in local issues that pertain to each

Chapel of Sacred Mirrors Buys Permanent Site

For Immediate Release: Chapel of Sacred Mirrors leaves NYC,
CoSM Sanctuary to open in Wappinger, NY mid-2009.

The Chapel of Sacred Mirrors has been a sanctuary for contemplation and events encouraging the creative spirit in New York City since 2004. Hundreds of thousands of people have visited Alex and Allyson Grey’s living brochure; their vision of a permanent home, but the lease has ended. CoSM is pleased to announce the purchase of 40-acre former interfaith retreat campus, 65 miles up the Hudson River. It’s a 20-minute walk from the New Hamburg MetroNorth station or about an hour’s drive from NYC.

CoSM Sanctuary will offer spiritual gatherings; educational and cultural events emphasizing art as a spiritual practice. Visionary artists, musicians, dancers, scientists and teachers will share their wisdom here. Sun-filled galleries and libraries will provide meditative and contemplative space for the mind, body and soul. The chapel you have seen in sculpted model will be built for the artwork of Alex Grey and others.

CoSM Sanctuary has wonderful opportunities, but its upkeep was neglected for many years and its buildings have fallen into disrepair. With your help, this once-magnificent estate can be repurposed.

The brick carriage house will be converted to exhibit the Sacred Mirrors. A conference building will host art, meditation and yoga classes. A cabin in the woods will become a studio where artists-in-residence can paint and sculpt for the Chapel and beyond. The main house, a stunning wood-frame Victorian, needs extensive renovation to be weatherproof and energy-efficient. Simple, affordable overnight lodging and dining for up to 100 people will be available.

The Chapel of Sacred Mirrors is a 501(c)(3) organization, supported solely by donations from the community, which are deductible on income and estate taxes. Financial contributions and skilled volunteers are needed. An estimated two million dollars is required for renovation. There are tens of thousands of fans of Alex Grey and the Chapel of Sacred Mirrors, just ten dollars from each can add up quickly.

full bassnectar update coming soon i promise! so much cookin in this oven, but i wanna take some time to put into the next update, and for now, this is a small note about WHAT TO DO NOW?

in terms of ....obama is elected, bush is "gone" and the economy is TANKING.
i can't imagine anything easier after such a push over the past few years to just relax now that "our guy" is in the Whitehouse.

in fact a politically-themed email seems almost exhausting to read, doesn't it?

well anyhow, when i got this latest MoveOn.org email i found myself feeling disinterested...just kind of like "ug! havent i thought about this stuff enough already???!" but sure enough, the answr is no.

NOW MORE THAN EVER is our time to buck-the-fuck-up and get our hands dirty... i think it is finally a time when our voices will be louder, and more necessary than ever. The financial crisis is extremely serious...and in large part is due to policies (and people) of the past, whose residue is still thick.

have a gander at this, i think it is UBER crucial to insist on sme transparency and ACCOUNTABILITY for ANYONE in a place of power/money/media.

this is imprtant in my opinion:

"Congress must place enforceable, common-sense limits on salaries at all the banks that have taken taxpayer dollars."

Sen. McCaskill showed courage standing up to the status quo. We've got to show the rest of Congress that this is the kind of leadership we need to get us out of this crisis and make the economy work for all Americans. Limiting pay at companies taking bailouts won't fix our financial system—that will take a lot more hard work—but it's an important first step.

Track ID from set at Burning Man '08?

Hey folks - this is a pretty old request but it took me FOREVER to finally get accepted into this message board.

I really, really want to know the name of this one track that Lorin played on Thursday night at Burning Man '08. It was at the huge dome at about 10 and Esplanade or so. Yes, the night where he made lots of political comments, etc.

His last track or second to last track was something totally amazing. I've never heard a track like that before. It was this super crazy frantic, almost hardcore track. It sounded kind of like gabber and dance hall. Everyone was hopping around like broken robots.

Does anyone know which track I'm talking about? Does anyone know what it's called or anything about it?

Call to Action work day @ CEll Space this Sat (Daytime)

A dispatch from Cell Space to all classes, studio members and event producers.

Having secured our "Place of Entertainment Permit" and countless building permits we have somehow not yet received our "Place of Assembly Permit" from the fire department….

Well after a stop over by the FD we find that it is time to secure this. If we do not we would not be able to host more than 49 persons in the building… Not good.
We have really had a great time with events and classes over the last year and we want to keep it going…

The good news is we are for the most part compliant with their guidelines. There is a lot of house keeping and some small construction projects that need to be completed before we can request a full inspection with them and get this permit secured.

So in order to complete these projects in a timely manner and to give us a chance to get together and meet each other we are having a full on Action Day here at Cell this Saturday. We are especially reaching out to those who enjoy the Cell for classes, events, workshops and all of the other great things going on here.
We will be meeting at 10am with a few pancakes some coffee and a snap in our steps to start on the work. We will have a bb-q lunch and a large stew for dinner. Veggie and meat option available. Come by at any point during the day and lend a hand. There will be all kinds of tasks from cleaning and dusting to small carpentry projects. All skill levels are welcome…
In the past these workdays have proved to be lots of fun and a great way to meet other Cell Space folks. So if you haven't been to Cell for a while or you are there for classes or events all the time, come over this Sat and join us for Action Day!

NEW YEARS EVE SHENANIGANS (upDATE)

Hello my frenz!!!!

The moment is upon us, and to be honest i don't think i have ever been more excited about new years before...it usually passes as a Hallmark storm, but this year for me, it realllly feels like the shift into the next phase.

Break on through to the other side....

I have chained myself to the desk here at the bassnectar labs, stopping only to inhale evaporated Spirulina-scented steam and to call my mom and tell her i love her. Other than that, it has been 24-7 madscience here...sculpting a set of music that is not only magical, deep and pulverizing, but also gelatinous and flexible so i can play around inside of it.

Im getting together all the dopest standout crushers from this year, along with heaps of new material and little special pieces of sonic art. The sound system at Sea of Dreams this year is OVER THE TOP...my arm hair was literally vibrating yesterday. I have to say, it sounded WAY better with ear plugs, so do yourself a favor and bring them. I just bought 2,000 pairs to pass out, but as of yesterday there have been over 5,500 tickets sold (WOW!!!!!!!!!) and they expect a big walk up, so bring your own. Im serious...music sounds SOOOOOO much better when you dive inside of it and submerge yourself.

So the line up is LOADED, topped of course, by none other than Theivery Corporation...who need no introduction, but out of respect let me just say i have been a rabid fan for over a decade, AND when i saw them live this summer i was stunned by how HEAVY their set was. The venue in San Francisco is huge, and it will be packed with special features.

I am supposed to play music at 1am, and no doubt there will be some fluctations there, but i have 2 hours to go for it, and at this point i think i am MOST excited about the last ten minutes, cuz i LOVE THE MELTDOWN!!!!!!

If you are going to be elsewhere tonight, i am wishing you a very safe and healthy experience, and i look forward to this next year, hopefully we will see each other soon.

We are back in effect after an almost sadisticly nonstop tour this fall. Our team of 5-ish musical mutants traversed the lands, bringing gifts of bass and trading it for local barter in blood sweat and what felt like ten zillion bouncing bodies.

Trevor The Brave is planning some un-Christly amount of bass carnage for NYE and working with PK & Dylon to create the touring bassnectar sound systym for '09 (BOH!). Mark & Marci are making the eggnog and feeding it to Buddy the Dog (and acting Webmaster) while Andy plays rasta in Jamaica and Squints adjusts the exposure on the lighting guns. Ralf is working on hoody designs, and Jake/Jesse are planning the MADNESS that will become the 2009 Tour (a tender mix of joy and fear fills my heart...), Cerrithwen is scouring the internets for accapellas, jeremy is warping away, ... and my hordes of collaborating eunuchs are clicking their mouses, my file-sharing friends are a-tempting, the dubstep is twinkling the glitch-womp is sparkling, the uber-thrust is blinkling and the dream-core is calling.

And i am falling off the train of my thought like a drunken hobo.

VOTING DETAILS: How To, When, Where, What, Voters Guide, ETC

whats up everybody!!!

the tour has been incredibly off the hook, i am so grateful for all the support and high energy and nonstop enthusiasm. THANK YOU!!!

So the election is THIS TUESDAY!
i do not need to preach to the converted, or yap your ear off. it's simple:

1. We MUST maximize our democracy and we MUST vote the Republicans out of office. we MUST make Obama the next president.
But beyond that, are TONS of local issues that affect you and your family. MAXIMIZE the democracy by getting involved...EDUCATE yourself.

2. You can make an enormous difference by taking a few hours over the next few days and make sure everyone you know is going to vote or already has. Help your friends and your friend's friends, and your friend's parents, and your enemies parents and your parole officer and your girlfriend's neighbor FIND THEIR VOTING PLACE and make sure they go and vote. (whoever thinks they are too cool to vote or talk politics in this country is a fool and does not deserve the constitutional rights that they have)

3. There are a LOT of issues besides the obvious presidential issue. Loads of propositions, and congressional/senate votes too! Lots of LOCAL issues too! Lots of BAD IDEAS with good names, seeking your (our) money, and vice versa. SO YOU MUST EDUCATE YOURSELF AND EACH OTHER. (a great example of this is the california initiative: Alternative Fuels And Renewable Energy. GREAT NAME RIGHT?? except this is a FUCKED initiative wit a nice name...be careful of the names of these things... you gotta RESEARCH)
***In california, BOTH INITIATIVES with nice eco-friendly names are BAD for the cause, they are tricking you. great example of how important it is to RESEARCH and EDUCATE YOURSELF before voting.

4. Below is a voting guide. I used it. i trust it, but YOU SHOULD READ IT and decide for yourself. i vote in accordance with The League of Women VOters about 90% of the time...they are ON POINT. my friends at False Profit also have some really good insight. Read, and then decide for yourself. GET OUT THERE AND CRUSH IT, MY FRIENDS!!!!!

(i happen to know more about the California issues than other places, but if you research trustworthy sources like LWV and Green Party you are on the right track.)

Here is the False Profit guide to the propositions. I voted with an absentee ballot, but if i was home i would vote early and i would follow this:

California Propositions

 • Prop 1A: High-speed rail from SF to LA - YES
 This proposition would authorize about $10 billion in bonds, which would be used in conjunction with federal and private funding, to aid in constructing a planned high-speed rail system in california. This chunk of funding would be directed to the SF-to-LA corridor in particular. SF to LA in 2.5 hours for $55?? Hellz yeah--let's get building! Maybe not the best use of funds right now, but damn it'd be sweet.

• Prop 2: Fair treatment of farm animals - YES 
This requires by law that farm animals have enough room in their cages to move. This is more humane than not giving them the room to move. http://yesonprop2.com/
(and even if you are not an animal rights activist: healthier farms = healthier food)

• Prop 3: Children's Hospital Bond Act - YES 
Authorizes $980 million in general obligation bonds for remodeling and equipping children's hospitals in CA. Currently the California health care system is crippled by a staggering number of uninsured patients and underfunding for the struggling MediCal system. These financial woes are compounded by the Seismic Safety Law that went into effect in Jan of this year requiring that all CA hospitals renovate or rebuild in accordance with strict earthquake standards. Hospitals unable to comply face closure by 2013. I think the SF Chronicle put it best: "Our reservations about obtaining bond money through the initiative process are trumped by the need to assure that these facilities - known for their specialized care and groundbreaking research - remain open."

• Prop 4: Waiting Period and Parental Notification for Abortion - NO NO NO 
This would require that all women under the age of 18 get parental consent before they can be legally given an abortion. This poses a significant challenge to the right of women in this age group to have abortions. This is the third attempt to chip away at abortion rights for minors in the past few years. We think that is a shame. I want to stress people vote NOOOOO on this dangerous legislation that would require young women who find themselves in difficult situations to tell their parents before receiving an abortion. Don't get me wrong, I am a mother and would want my daughter to tell me if she were pregnant, but I DO NOT WANT the state FORCING her to do so. http://www.noonprop4.org/

• Prop 5: Nonviolent Offenders: Sentencing, Parole and Rehabilitation - YES
 According to the ACLU, An ambitious criminal justice reform measure, Proposition 5 offers common sense solutions to prison overcrowding by providing drug treatment as an alternative to incarceration for non-violent offenders, saving California taxpayers billions of dollars. I just want to second the "yes" on this one - I've been hearing about it from the Drug Policy Alliance for months, and the consortium of groups including the ACLU and DPA that have been working really hard on this prop is excited about its potential to let CA become a model that influences criminal justice policy nationally in a more humane (and economically practical) direction. Big yes...Obama has been distracting me from making as much noise about this one as I should be. B/c as befits any common sense crime-related bill, it's the subject of baseless "criminals are scary and are coming for your children, if Barack Obama and his cadre of terrorists doesn't get them first" type campaigning.

• Prop 6: Criminal Penalties and Laws and Public Safety Funding - NO
 This will allow more people under the age of 18 to be tried as adults. It is costly to the state and to society as it will mean more people are in jail.

• Prop 7: Renewable Energy - NO NO! 
This prop is will force small renewable energy companies out of the market, disrupt that market, and is opposed by everyone with a pulse. Too fast, too simple, unconsidered (http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2008/10/05/ED7D137S5T.DTL)

• Prop 8: Limit on Marriage - NONONONONONO This prop would write discrimination into an amendment to the state constitution. Prop 8 eliminates the rights of same sex couples to marry and states that the only legal marriages are ones between a woman and a man. It would significantly reverse America's progress on equality by denying an already recognized right to a community that includes many individuals we know and admire. Furthermore, San Francisco has a strong tradition of honoring and celebrating diversity. We welcome people of all creeds, colors, beliefs and sexual orientations. As a result, this city stands as a beacon to those who seek to live their lives free from discrimination. It is also the reason San Francisco has been at the forefront of movements for civil rights and equality for more than a century. We can't backpedal on this one. http://www.noonprop8.com/home

• Prop 9: Criminal Justice System: Parole and Victims' Rights - NO According to the ACLU, Prop 9 is a well intentioned but poorly written and truly dangerous initiative. It will negatively impact California's most vulnerable residents — our children — by diverting hundreds of millions from schools and education to spending on prisons and jails. It puts huge burdens on local law enforcement and creates more red tape but does not provide new services to victims.

• Prop 10: Alternative Fuel Vehicles and Renewable Energy - NO 
Using less oil is good. So is developing renewable energy sources. However, the devil is in the details. The way "alternative fuel vehicle" is defined in this measure, the vast majority of the public funds set aside will go to unnecessary natural gas car and truck subsidies. This is a developed technology that private investors are already funding, and the vehicles are already selling well. More importantly there will be little or no reduction in the environmental impact, mainly because natural gas vehicles are only slightly cleaner than regular cars. Prop 10 is backed and funded by T. Boone Pickens, a Texas oilman who has recently made large investments in natural gas. It's a bad return on taxpayer investment, basically designed to enrich a small set of businessmen.

• Prop 11: Redistricting Amendment - NO 
This prop changes the authority over the geographic boundaries for state and federal congressional districts from elected representatives to an unelected commission of fourteen. Even if the process for selecting these fourteen people was not as absurdly convoluted as it is proposed, it would still be a bad idea to give fourteen people control over a power that is so contentious its abuse has earned its own moniker: gerrymandering.

• Prop 12: Veteran's Bond Act - YES
 This proposition would authorize the state to issue $900 million in bonds to the existing Cal-Vet Loan Program, to help veterans buy farms and homes. Con: The Cal-Vet Loan Program applies to all veterans, rich or poor, from combat or non-combat service scenarios. Pro: Veterans don't get adequate support from the federal government, so a program like this is warranted.

2, this is just my opinion: pretty much across the board with senate/congressional seats, i strongly reccommend VOTING AGAINST the republican. The argument that we need to avoid "party politics" or "partisanship" is confusing and potentially manipulative (because it is true in theory) BUT:

The Republican Party is an insidiously corrupt, criminal system. It is 100% dedicated to control with a commitment to secrecy, lying, theft, and even murder. It is ok to say I STAND AGAINST THE REPUBLICAN PARTY just as it is ok to say I STAND AGAINST THE NAZI PARTY!

Don't let FOX News and Karl Rove cover their asses and avoid critique by now suggesting that we have non partisan discussions. There is a cancer in our country and it is called REPUBLICAN.

There are many other problems. And i hope that as soon as possible the debate in our country is between the Democrats and The Green party. (where the Democrats will be the conservative right in comparison)
With the Republicans as irrelevant and laughable as they should be.

The only thing we need to do with members of he Republican Party like Karl Rove, Dick Cheney, etc, is prosecute them as CRIMINALS, and in countries where they have fought to preserve the death penalty, we should use it on them and give them what they deserve; legally.

I say that with love for innocent people and an intolerance for global corruption and the Republican Party. I am not a fool, and i do not think the Democrats are the be all end all. Although i do have a lot of hope for Obama, and i know he is at least a STEP in the right direction.

Sunrise Sets, Downtempo & West Coast Lo Fi ??

Someone recently posted a video on youtube of the sunrise set at the playa:

The song that is playing has this melodic trancy groove that slowly twists, pulls and moves you through all types of liquidy motions, while it simultaneously opens up the mental doors to reflective contemplations!. That delicious downtempo beat is like a drug for my ears... I've not really heard much of anything even slightly similar to the music in this video on any bassnectar albumns.

So I'm wondering...do you have a downtempo side that you don't let out often because everybody (myself included) needs pleasure on the throbbing low frequencies? Is there a downtempo side project you've been working on under a different name? On the main site it says that West Coast Lo Fi is a new startup side project...which sounds like it might be leaning towards more melodic stuff? Perhaps a podcast of some downtempo lovelyness is in order? :)

Who knows...you might indirectly help to co-create some seriously chilled contemplative sessions through conscious downtempo rhythms!

Or should I only hope to hear such vibes during sunrise sets?

While the ins and outs of the record industry slowly suck my soul dry,
ive been cranking away making tunes and jams and loads of wonky bass
experiments. When releasing a full length album, where each track is
more of a finished SONG, my standards of what is done and what needs
more work are much higher. But i am watching time go by and so many
fricken reasons why tracks can't just be released...its nutso.

SO i was like F*CK IT, lets just put out a banger! And i threw
together a few different versions, and a bonus track, and we pressed
up a CD (which we have been passing out to crowd surfers on tour) and
its onsale at my website and at shows, and 4 of the tracks are
available digitally at places like Beatport, Juno, Addictech, etc...

My only concern is that these tunes are mostly a dancefloor
feel...just ridiculous crushing bass and such, which is fine, but ive
been also working on tunes with more character and different sounds
(album) which i gotta say....is months away from being finished. Being
on the road full time is amazing for so many reasons...but having no
time in my studio, with the proper speakers and everything i need at
my finger tips (including time) is the hardest part.
So December and January will hopefully be a good time for me to finish
album work.

For now, we will be releasing some diverse singles...the first of
which is HEADS UP. Here is the press release, etc below...hope you
enjoy!!!!!

Howdy folks,
Thossa you who are able to remember anything besides the insane musica that was dropped by a certain bassthwocker we all love so dearly might recall that Lorin announced that he would most likely not return to the playa. Although I am sure that there are a million reasons behind this decision, some of the main ones must involve:
1) How much of a "party scene" burning man is. What is the place of an activist DJ in a venue where (s)he feels that there is an exclusive focus on the side of any gathering that s/he prefers not to cater to?
2) The inability of soundcamps to apply for art grant funding from the BORG (there's already a good discussion of this on the burning man tribe http://bm.tribe.net/thread/de7b53e4-d6be-4b7a-a5be-d6d14a6eed1a ) and the huge amounts of debt that soundcamp organizers take on in order to create their venues.
..............................
Also, what could venues in general (not just BORG or specific soundcamps) do to facilitate more activism/ conscious gathering-centric events?
The flipside: what more could an artist (not just Lorin) do to bring about the same end?
And when is it too much?

I'm just personally curious about what y'all think.

"Viva-TIbet" is a 5 minute music video that dramatically shows the intense human rights abuses perpetrated by China in Tibet and calls upon the world to step up in a peaceful, non-violent way for justice and truth.
The Music for this 5 video was produced in April 2008 as a collaboration between Lorin Bassnectar and FreQ Nasty - two preeminent Bay Area DJs who's tracks have slammed the bass bins around the world, and who consistently bring a conscious beat to the dance of the movement.

BassNectar Backs Down from Battle

I (Arutyun Pashayan) aka. Haroot aka DjMT www.djmtheory.com (Spincycle Crew Los Angeles, representing Dj Dynamix and Dj War), challenged Mr. Bassnectar (Aka Lorin) to a Battle on the decks. I don't mind if he wussies out on the tables and uses cd decks, or his computer as usual. Of course, I was fixing bikes with JuracidBikes camped at Nexus when I caught him scram out on his fans after his cliche mashup set. His excuse was "I'm too tired". Personally, I have no excuses when I sleep for 4 hours at most at 2:00 and A or when I don't even get sleep at all I can still beat juggle, scratch, and beatmatch mashup sets in my sleep, Cough Lorin. Oh also, Burning Man is a social experiment, Art Festival, Music Festival, Tibetan Prayer and Remembrance of ones who have Passed away, you asshole its not just a PARTY, go read some books.

Finally! Cheap + Stylin + High-Quality Musicians Earplugs

If you DJ or go to electronic music shows and you don't want to suffer from tinnitus and hearing loss later on, I really recommend you wear ear plugs every time you go out. Every time. Just like a condom or birth control pill.

For a long time, there has been a limited number of choices.

- You can get foam earplugs for about a buck and they mess up the sound and make it hard to hear and converse.

- Then you could get Westone / Etymotic Research ER-15 custom "Musician's Plugs" if you visited an audiologist. They are custom moulded, sound good, look like a hearing aid. It sucks when you drop one in paya dust and you're on your hands and knees digging.. and everyone thinks you lost a pill.

- Then Etymotic Research came out with the $20 ER-20's (http://www.etymotic.com/ephp/er20.aspx) which sound good, except they're not comfortable and you look like a Teletubbie with these dumb plastic cylinders sticking out of your ears. Overall, I thought 'FAIL'

Finally, I am glad to report that I have discovered and tested a high-quality ear plug that only cost $25, and I think it is more comfortable and more fashionable than the custom-audiologist-moulded "Musician's Plugs." I haven't done an A/B comparison with the custom earplugs (I lost mine) - but it sounds damn good. It feels light and discreet (you can even trim the rubber stems to make it shorter - but harder to take out) - and it only blocks HALF as much sound as foam earplugs - and it sounds twice as clear.

They're called the "Alpine MusicSafe Natural Sound Professional Musician's Ear Plugs"

I have them in now and I am listening to LOUD trance on my Sennheiser headphones and it feels totally comfortable and sounds great.

Lorin, check these babies out! And the rest of you people, there's no excuse anymore. Going to a party without filtering ear plugs is a lot more foolish than going to the beach without your sunglasses!

August 1st, 2008

In a landmark decision, FCC Chairman Kevin Martin and Commissioners Michael Copps and Jonathan Adelstein approved a bipartisan “enforcement order” that would require Comcast to stop blocking and publicly disclose its methods for manipulating Internet traffic.

Tests by the Associated Press and others showed that Comcast blocked users’ legal peer-to-peer transmissions by sending fake signals that cut off the connection between file-sharers. Today’s decision follows a months-long FCC investigation, launched in response to a complaint from Free Press and Public Knowledge urging the federal agency to stop Comcast’s blocking.

In response to the victory, Josh Silver, Free Press executive director, said: “Comcast’s history of deception and continued blocking shows brazen contempt for the online consumer protections established by the FCC. We commend Chairman Martin and Commissioners Copps and Adelstein for standing up for internet users and working across party lines to protect free speech and the free market.”

In his statement this morning, Martin compared Comcast’s blocking practices to allowing the post office to discriminate against mail “Would you be OK with the post office opening your mail, deciding they didn’t want to bother delivering it, and hiding that fact by sending it back to you stamped ‘address unknown – return to sender?’” he asked. “Or if they opened letters mailed to you, decided that because the mail truck is full sometimes, letters to you could wait, and then hid both that they read your letters and delayed them?”

The Fight Continues

This precedent-setting victory sends a powerful message to phone and cable companies that breaking Net Neutrality rules will not be tolerated. And it marks a milestone in the fight to preserve a free and open Internet – and the first time the FCC has enforced the peoples’ right to see and hear what they want on the Internet without blocking or slowing down content.

This victory is monumental. But the fight to safeguard Net Neutrality is far from over.

Commissioner Copps recognized the struggle ahead, and called for the FCC to adopt a principle that commits the FCC to a policy of network openness. “A clearly stated commitment of nondiscrimination would make clear that the Commission is not having a one-night stand with net neutrality, but an affair of the heart and a commitment for life,” he said in a statement.

Already, more than 1.6 million people have contacted the FCC and Congress to protect Net Neutrality. The calls, petitions and e-mails must not stop. Now is the time to flood our policymakers with the message that we demand an open and free Internet now and always.

I just wanted to detail the freakishly awesome behavior that Lorin drove the hoards of high sierra-ians to this past weekend...
High Sierra is an interesting combination of several generations of festival goers, and I heard positive feedback from all levels. After the 30 minute grandstand stage set (sadness for everyone who didn't get into late night, I know!) several members of the older generation of festiefiends who I had been talkin' to earlier told me that although they generally didn't like electronic music and hadn't paid attention to all of the positive things they had heard about Bassnectar, they would pay better attention now. And (surprise surprise) they liked the boneshakin' bass :)
Several of the children I talked to listed Bassnectar as one of their favorites of the festival.

And then there was late night... There was this girl, and she was humping an amp as I have never seen an amp humped before, and I have seen more than my share of speaker humping. She was eventually pried off, but not before she was able to... ummm....thoroughly prove her point. The place was RAGIN' and packed, as crazy and beautiful as if it were Saturday, but it was only Thursday...
Easily the best time at High Sierra, further proven by the complete absence of the previously ubiquitous "Bassnectar's Vacation" posters the next morning.
The short of it: thanks for a kick arse night, Lorin :)

What is this thing; the dream of being human? We seem driven to be curious about the world/universe around us, spirit, novel new ideas and creations (Novelty in the McKenna sense of the word), to feel emotion . . to dream, to create. We due this as a matter of course for our nature; actually we do it so well no one even questions it. Our potential is unlimited; our place in the Universe as being conscious beings seemingly unique to our knowledge: the Universe aware of itself.

Billions of years of space time have had to pass in order for there to be this moment, right here right now. Whole stars have lived and died to create the world stuff of planet we inhabit. Life had to begin and go through countless steps to produce us. The force behind this continues to move forward, making no mistakes, rolling no dice. Here we are as human's, the latest technology the Universe has created. .

All creatures have played their role in the continuing journey that is the Evolution of the universe: greater and great organization, greater and great complexity. As the speed of evolution increases the world of thought, consciousness, and manifestation are the new grounds being laid by the Universe. Our ultimate role in this whole story is yet unknown, because the story is not done being told. What is this thing called "Human"? What is the dream of the Universe is placing Human's here and now; exactly where we belong, doing exactly what we do?

As we approach and are drawn towards a seemingly inevitable singular moment in time: call it Revelation,the next step in evolution of consciousness, 2012, the Mayan Calendar, prophetic visions of all cultures and times, Apocalypse (which means "the lifting of the veil" interestingly), the coming of God/dess, whatever . .it's out there, and we seem to be playing our role.

What does this dream of Human mean to you?

below is a journal entry i wrote today, if you are wondering
what tha sam hill is hapn'n in my cabeza.

but first, MAY 17 @ THE FILLMORE, i will toss mad details upon
thy heads next week, but this is a quick note to say:
We are running out of tickets, and i wanna make sure any
bassheads that desire to be a part of this
extremely special night are in fact able to do so.

After competing in an Ultimate Fighting Championship,
Mudwrestle, Brawl-For-it-All with the Powers The Be,
and the Powers that love Budwieser, etc, (you really would
not believe the hoops we have had to jump through, lawdamighty!)
we have emerged battered and bruised, but thankfully we have:

1. very limited tickets at 5 & Diamond in SF, run dont walk.
They are lowest price available (22.50$) and if you care, we are
not makin a DIME on this event, we are running tickets at the
LOWEST possible cause, and bringing the HIGHEST possible
production posible. (this is kind of a downlow thing @ 5&D so
keep it cool)

2. This Sunday, Mother's Day, :) the box office at The
Fillmore is open from 10am-4pm (i am SO fecking sorry, we were
originally told 4pm-10pm and after half of my friends finished
texting me frusterated messages i am here to say SORRY! the
correct time is 10am-4pm THIS SUNDAY for advance tickets with no
high fees (yeck!)

3. They will be available night of as well of course, but
will sell out at some point, so thats the best way to guarnatee
you get in.

4. Early arrival is a MUST, we have so much in store, i will
hit you on Monday with deets.

5. i wanted to tell you, in case you didnt see the tickets
that the Fillmore printed yet (god bless their hearts), there is
this DRINK...its called BUDWEISER. I doubt you have heard of it,
so i am really relieved that they printed an ad for it on our
tickets, but anyways, in case you did not get a ticket, and in
case you had like 0.0003 microseconds free from having
advertisements rammmmed oh so deeply into your anus, i just
wanted TO MAKE SURE that everyone knows, in case they dont, that
there is just this *drink* called BUDWEISER. and its a beer, and
you can BUY IT, at 7-11. or at Safeway. And their slogan is "True
Music" which is so cool, like SOOOOO COOL! As soon as i read
their slogan, i was like, OH THEY RELATE TO ME!!!!! OH WOW! I
GOTTA TELL EVERYONE ABOUT BUDWEISER NOW!

So yes, just in case you didnt read the sentences i just wrote,
and did not get a special ticket to Bassnectar that The Fillmore
printed Budweiser ads on, we just REALLY WANT TO MAKE SURE YOU
UNDERSTAND: There is a DRINK. Its called BUDWEISER. it is FOR
SALE. you can BUY IT at all kinds of places like 7-11 or Safeway,
or even maybe at a Food Market, like the one at CHEVRON.

And if you have trouble finding it, just pull out your VERIZON
PHONE (by the way, Verizon' is a COMPANY. They make CELL PHONES.
they will SELL YOU ONE. You can BUY IT. Its SO COOL. They are
cool. They care about you)

ok, so yeah...had just about MY FILL of fuckin corporate
headfuckery for the week.

Gang, i was the MOST upset (i know its trite, but...) about
that. Nobody in this kru had any idea they were printing Bud Ads
on the tickets...not like it fucking really MATTERS at all, but
its the principle. Fuck that.

So that said, in the spirit of commercialism, we are going to

So i wrote this little ditty this morning, its called Laying
On The Floor. Its a true story.

last night i had an interesting experience. it was kind of an
insane experience.

I was doing as i do, when alone in the studio, i will
intermittently rise from my desk of knobs and screens and buttons
and start "dancing"... i execute some really exquisite moves,
nobody is watching, nobody is interrupting me to talk, nobody
will be hurt or offended if i don't talk back. And depending on
the music playing, i can physically experience some pretty
serious stuff.

As it happens last night i was working on this song that i
initially started writing in reverence to a dead man i read
about, who i saw a bit of myself in, and i wanted to sense the
kind of urgent moment of peaking crystalization (the final moment
of the awareness of existence) immediately before vanishing from
that plane. So i have been tampering with different melodies,
trying to play things forward and backward over each other, using
extremely demonic keys with ultra softness and dreamy warmth, but
its very frantic, and completely insane.

So i was "dancing", if you will, and if you won't then i was
twitching...more like kind of flexing all of my muscles in wierd
ways at rapid speeds, including my face and my brain and my
fingers and my everything, and i think i was sobbing but i wasnt
crying, i was just heaving...i think there was anger surging from
weird untapped oceans, and there was rage (cyclones, governments,
Budweiser Ads on the tickets to my events, the irony of feeling
so vicsiously anticorporate and living in a corporate world,
spending all my money on the demons i hate most, like Verizon,
Chevron, GE, Rupert Murdoch, etc) and there was intense joy -
like an 'unbearable lightness' - a feeling like none of that
could touch me...ME, as in my soul, it can rape my body, but it
cannot have my thoughts

And i was flexing into this, kind of a one man mosh pit, with
my eyes clenched so tight i think i was getting a headache, and
then i came to and i was on the floor.

The music was still playing, but i was laying there, kind of
crumpled. But i didnt want to get up. I pretended i was
quadrapalegic, i cant even spell that word, much less imagine
that reality, but i pretended it, then i rolled over onto my
back, and i chose not to get up for several hours.

i let myself feel all the seething stress inside of me. The
trite shit like prepping for shows, finishing albums, pleasing
your coworkers, pleasing your friends, etc. And the heavier shit
like watching as a world unravels - like having to watch someone
kill your family, while they tie your arms behind your back, and
force your eyes open. Again, not that i can truly imagine that
horror, but i know that it exists, and i know that EQUIVALENTS
exist, and regardless, it was just a metaphor anyway.

The point is i feel like each moment is so tender and so full
of potential...bursting, quivering potential, and i dont think i
ever developed the basic common sense, or adult ability to filter
that shit out, and just get shit done. That is probably why i am
not leading a normal life, and probably why i think i will live
hard and die fast.

But there i was on the floor. Thinking about all the people
who hate me. All the gossip i hear, all the shitty things i read,
all the terribly judgmental expressions of dissatisfaction that
you are basically inviting when you put yourself into the public
eye. And while i hear an item of negativity maybe once for every
hundered or more positive things, i was laying there letting them
soak in.

Realizing all i really want to do is please everyone (you
can't) and fix everything (you won't) and do it right now,
because that is just how i am.

It is intense to be riding the current of a dream you had, or
others have had, that is essentially formless and written in
alien code.

It is intense to be giving birth to something that is under a
microscope of speculation and judgement even as it is squeezing
out of you and is totally unprepared for final presentation. But
there is no final presentation. i don't think we ever make it to
that point, because we die first, which is why life can be sad,
even when it is so beautiful.

I realized that things are moving so fast, that i have grown
unable to tend to one on one relationships like i used to. I used
to make it an essential point that i basically knew EVERYONE in
the music scene, and paid them respect and attention. Kind of
never letting people just be fans, cuz i would make them my
friends. Now that time runs at 8 million times the speed, and all
16 of my selves are working overtime, i thought about how i
probably have neglected thousands of people this year, not
listening to them talk enough, not giving them enough personal
validation.

And i am so glad for that, because i am no longer interested
in making myself able to do that, i am interested in moving on,
at a rapid pace, and hoping that somewhere out there in the
brains of people exists a memory of who i really am on the
inside, where doubt and rumor cannot touch or maim, where there
is a laughing boy with a bowl cut and no shame, who wants to
share his fruit roll up with the whole class and make a beautiful
drawing.

I didn't get up because it felt good there on the floor. Had
anyone walked in on me, they would have thought i have surely
lost the plot (i think i have) but it was insanely peaceful.

it was almost like a cocoon where i recharged, and decided to
keep moving forward, letting the haters hate harder and the
lovers love deeper, and trying to reflect with greater intensity
this oddball intention i have had since before i can remember
which is to touch as many people as i can with this weird sense
of compassion and inspiration that is inside of me.

Pretty much everything i do or say can be made to sound
outrageously lame. And as i ricochet around inside this glass
ball of honesty with myself, laying like a goon on my floor, i
made a little promise to keep moving forward, maybe letting my
creative pace dictate my schedule a bit more often than the
hysterical, obsessive, manic voice in my head. i will at least
let them trade off more.

What made me get up, aside from the fact that i basically
have no ass, so laying on a floor turns to bone-against-carpet
rather quickly, was the ever present thought that we have it SO
good in this life. Most of our problems are really just part of
life. And while it is ok for them to exist, i realy just feel so
bored watching as stupid, inept, foolish adults fan the fires of
a hopeless shitstorm, taking us all with them on their poorly
designed carousel, when all the while i have had dreams of the
most ridiculous mash-up creation that is a mix of a ferris wheel,
a roller coaster, and a virtual reality machine, and even though
i am so afraid to ride it, i know its so much better than this
loopy-ass carousel of idiotic

Fillmore show, thoughts and reflections

First off. Wow, sold out in yer own backyard. Hi 5! It was great being a part of it.

I have to say, that was quite a show. It's been quite a ride watching Lorin go from spinning trance in Oakland warehouses to owning it onstage at the Fillmore. Congratulations. It only gets bigger and better from here on out.

I really liked the social conscious thing that kept getting thrown in over the mic. Not too preachy, not to screechy. Right on point. And! I got to meet Davey D. That guy fucking rules!

Everyone sounded great. How about Beats Antique?? Awesome. And the hip-hop. Yeya.

One thing, though, that really rocked my socks: Videolicious and Phat Conductor just slaying it with the visuals. OMG. One of the best visual shows I have EVER seen. Thanks guys!
