Bassnectar sets at Burnign Man this year?

I assume I'm not the only Nectar fan eagerly awaiting word on when and where (and, yikes, if) Lorin is playing shows at Burning Man this year.....

...unless I totally missed a thread on this topic already.

Anyone know? Lo? You gonna rock the Playa as you always have?
Dubstep takeover?

I saw Bassnectar at Sonic Bloom in Winter Park ,CO last month.. and I was sad to hear the set was mostly dubstep. My heart sank and I waited for the next DJ to come on... after trying hard to dance but being unable to really feel any magic in it. Just boom, boom, gloomm, vrooom, boom.

I remember the same feeling when drum-and-bass started getting played in the chill rooms of rave parties, rather than ambient or trip-hop. Some people were like "wow!" and other people think it's just inferior, more urban, lower vibration music.

Yeah, I know Lorin plays all types of tunes (I've heard The Cure, Shpongle remixes, swing, hip hop) and over the years he's had wicked taste....but I definitely dig the faster, cleaner breakbeat sound much, much more than dubstep and glitch shizit. I find it easier to dance, too.

What do you think? What are your feelings on dubstep sets at the peak slot of parties?

HIgh Sierra CrAziNesss

I just wanted to detail the freakishly awesome behavior that Lorin drove the hoards of high sierra-ians to this past weekend...
High Sierra is an interesting combination of several generations of festival goers, and I heard positive feedback from all levels. After the 30 minute grandstand stage set (sadness for everyone who didn't get into late night, I know!) several members of the older generation of festiefiends who I had been talkin' to earlier told me that although they generally didn't like electronic music and hadn't paid attention to all of the positive things they had heard about Bassnectar, they would pay better attention now. And (surprise surprise) they liked the boneshakin' bass :)
Several of the children I talked to listed Bassnectar as one of their favorites of the festival.
( tangent: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pg5FhkFvnmY )

And then there was late night... There was this girl, and she was humping an amp as I have never seen an amp humped before, and I have seen more than my share of speaker humping. She was eventually pried off, but not before she was able to... ummm....thoroughly prove her point. The place was RAGIN' and packed, as crazy and beautiful as if it were Saturday, but it was only Thursday...
Easily the best time at High Sierra, further proven by the complete absence of the previously ubiquitous "Bassnectar's Vacation" posters the next morning.
The short of it: thanks for a kick arse night, Lorin :)

I was sad to hear of his passing...

”Power does what it wants, and now they’re just more naked about it. Now they just put it right out front and say, ‘This is what we’re doing to you folks’. It’s, you know, this country is finished. It’s been sliding downhill a long time.“
“And everybody’s got a cell phone that makes pancakes, so they don’t want to rock the boat. They don’t want to make any trouble. The people have been bought off by gizmos and toys in this country, and no one questions things anymore.”
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2UVXj8F9Fmk

"The real owners are the big wealthy business interests that control things
and make all the important decisions. Forget the politicians, they're an
irrelevancy. The politicians are put there to give you the idea that you
have freedom of choice. You don't. You have no choice. You have owners. They
own you. They own everything. They own all the important land. They own and
control the corporations. They've long since bought and paid for the Senate,
the Congress, the statehouses, the city halls. They've got the judges in
their back pockets. And they own all the big media companies, so that they
control just about all of the news and information you hear. They've got you
by the balls. They spend billions of dollars every year lobbying - lobbying
to get what they want. Well, we know what they want; they want more for
themselves and less for everybody else. But I'll tell you what they don't
want. They don't want a population of citizens capable of critical
thinking. They don't want well-informed, well-educated people capable of
critical thinking. They're not interested in that. That doesn't help them.
That's against their interests. They don't want people who are smart enough
to sit around the kitchen table and figure out how badly they're getting
fucked by a system that threw them overboard 30 fucking years ago. You know
what they want? Obedient workers - people who are just smart enough to run
the machines and do the paperwork but just dumb enough to passively accept
all these increasingly shittier jobs with the lower pay, the longer hours,
reduced benefits, the end of overtime and the vanishing pension that
disappears the minute you go to collect it. And, now, they're coming for
your Social Security. They want your fucking retirement money. They want it
back, so they can give it to their criminal friends on Wall Street. And you
know something? They'll get it. They'll get it all, sooner or later, because
they own this fucking place. It's a big club, and you ain't in it. You and I
are not in *the big club.*"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y0r71L7cojE

Bill Moyers kicks some serious butt talkin' about the importance of free, independent, and diverse media at the National Conference for Media Reform that happened a few weeks ago.
My favorite part is when he has everyone stand up and meet the people sitting next to them- way to turn a lecture motivational, no? It's always so great to remember that we're not alone.

Oh, and two scary notes on sleeping pills:

There are nearly three-hundred and sixty five nights a year, and on one third of them, somewhere across North America, you will find a modern day social mosh pit of hippies, ex-ravers, hipsters, dub reggae heads, Dead-heads, Burning Man freaks, artists, fashion experimentalists, social activists, and hip-hop enthusiasts all packed into one steamy room of grinding, orgiastic expression and musical experimentation known as a bass ritual, or, more precisely, a night with Bassnectar.

Playing at over TWO-hundred and fifty shows a year; to thousands of different people a month; from sold out festivals to overcrowded clubs and warehouses to tight and tiny bars and venues; Bassnectar’s enormous popularity reflects the current hunger for raw substance in modern music and a desire for social integrity inside the party scene.

Bassnectar’s double-disc collection 2005 debut entitled "Mesmerizing The Ultra," a journey through next-level musical mutations, dreamy dubtempo, massive bass lines, heavy sledgehammer beats, head-nodding hip-hop, and a wild assortment of unlikely collaborations; remixing and producing with such artists as the enigmatic and mysterious Buckethead, the jam band super group Sound Tribe Sector 9, cult bluegrass rock star Michael Kang (String Cheese Incident), roots musical activists like Michael Franti (Spearhead), Heavyweight Dub Champion and KRS One, and dubstep/breakbeat pioneer FreQ Nasty. Both critically acclaimed and voraciously consumed, the record helped define the current sound of the West Coast Underground.

Bassnectar’s most recent full-length release, "Underground Communication." Is where he takes another step forward with is genre-blending of musical styles and emotions, combining the visceral melodic presence of modern listening music, with the force and volume of sound system dancehall devastation. WHILE the previous record featured collaborations with musicians and bands, the new record is more of an exploration of hip-hop culture, featuring scores of MCs and rhythmic poetics mashed atop a heavy driving range of tempo and, of course, those signature throbbing bass lines. Rooted firmly in political conviction, philosophical intention and backed by a rabid fan base and dedicated following, “Underground Communication” sets a new standard for the possibilities of merging music, art, new media and social activism.

Speaking on the meaning behind the title of the album, Bassnectar explains "It centers on the concepts of indie media, the strength of underground networking, social activism and defiance through music, hip hop, and the internet." Judging from his enormous following without any commercial radio play, media push, or licensing product placement hype, the title fits perfectly, and comes at a time when issues of net neutrality, corporate media, and privatization of radio and news outlets couldn’t be more crucial. Already gaining critical acclaim from tastemakers at URB, FLAVORPILL, and BPM along with winning local Nitevibe.com, SF Weekly and SF Bay Guardian honors for San Francisco's "Best DJ," Bassnectar’s music is forging new paths in the electronic music world, the Burning Man scene, underground hip hop circles, and beyond.

Crowd pleasing singles are, "Yo" featuring Spanish rapper Kristina Maria with remixes by Princess Superstar, Zion I (Amp Live), Speaker Junk and “Bomb The Blocks” featuring underground queen MC Persia with remixes by Ghislain Poirier, Magik Johnson, Daz-IKue and Bassnectar.

Currently when Bassnectar is not working your town into a frenzy, he can be found 24/7 working on his upcoming release for 2008 and also working on new shows. Look for a new single in the Spring and keep checking (www.bassnectar.net) for the latest podcasts and updates

Darlene first became interested in the art of DJing in early 2005, shortly after being told by an acquaintance that she couldn't touch his turntables because they were "too technical"...

... she immediately marched down to her local music store and picked up a pair and from that day on, she got straight down-to-business - sharpening her beat-matching, programming and track-selection. Two short years later, after holding down a residence and aiding in promoting the successful and long-running "Extra Strength Saturdays" @ Die Maschine... nowadays Miss SW@T plays many local & out of city / province events and club-nights, whipping Canada's dance-floors into dripping masses... as well as playing feature sets on local university radio station 101.5 UMFM "Bassline Dropouts" (Saturdays nights from 7-9:30 CST) local Bassdrive.com show "Rinseout Radio" (also Saturdays from 7-?? CST) - Darlene feels quite secure in her place as one of the proud (and few) female DJs in Winnipeg, MB.

below is a journal entry i wrote today, if you are wondering
what tha sam hill is hapn'n in my cabeza.

but first, MAY 17 @ THE FILLMORE, i will toss mad details upon
thy heads next week, but this is a quick note to say:
We are running out of tickets, and i wanna make sure any
bassheads that desire to be a part of this
extremely special night are in fact able to do so.

After competing in an Ultimate Fighting Championship,
Mudwrestle, Brawl-For-it-All with the Powers The Be,
and the Powers that love Budwieser, etc, (you really would
not believe the hoops we have had to jump through, lawdamighty!)
we have emerged battered and bruised, but thankfully we have:

1. very limited tickets at 5 & Diamond in SF, run dont walk.
They are lowest price available (22.50$) and if you care, we are
not makin a DIME on this event, we are running tickets at the
LOWEST possible cause, and bringing the HIGHEST possible
production posible. (this is kind of a downlow thing @ 5&D so
keep it cool)

2. This Sunday, Mother's Day, :) the box office at The
Fillmore is open from 10am-4pm (i am SO fecking sorry, we were
originally told 4pm-10pm and after half of my friends finished
texting me frusterated messages i am here to say SORRY! the
correct time is 10am-4pm THIS SUNDAY for advance tickets with no
high fees (yeck!)

3. They will be available night of as well of course, but
will sell out at some point, so thats the best way to guarnatee
you get in.

4. Early arrival is a MUST, we have so much in store, i will
hit you on Monday with deets.

5. i wanted to tell you, in case you didnt see the tickets
that the Fillmore printed yet (god bless their hearts), there is
this DRINK...its called BUDWEISER. I doubt you have heard of it,
so i am really relieved that they printed an ad for it on our
tickets, but anyways, in case you did not get a ticket, and in
case you had like 0.0003 microseconds free from having
advertisements rammmmed oh so deeply into your anus, i just
wanted TO MAKE SURE that everyone knows, in case they dont, that
there is just this *drink* called BUDWEISER. and its a beer, and
you can BUY IT, at 7-11. or at Safeway. And their slogan is "True
Music" which is so cool, like SOOOOO COOL! As soon as i read
their slogan, i was like, OH THEY RELATE TO ME!!!!! OH WOW! I
GOTTA TELL EVERYONE ABOUT BUDWEISER NOW!

So yes, just in case you didnt read the sentences i just wrote,
and did not get a special ticket to Bassnectar that The Fillmore
printed Budweiser ads on, we just REALLY WANT TO MAKE SURE YOU
UNDERSTAND: There is a DRINK. Its called BUDWEISER. it is FOR
SALE. you can BUY IT at all kinds of places like 7-11 or Safeway,
or even maybe at a Food Market, like the one at CHEVRON.

And if you have trouble finding it, just pull out your VERIZON
PHONE (by the way, Verizon' is a COMPANY. They make CELL PHONES.
they will SELL YOU ONE. You can BUY IT. Its SO COOL. They are
cool. They care about you)

ok, so yeah...had just about MY FILL of fuckin corporate
headfuckery for the week.

Gang, i was the MOST upset (i know its trite, but...) about
that. Nobody in this kru had any idea they were printing Bud Ads
on the tickets...not like it fucking really MATTERS at all, but
its the principle. Fuck that.

So that said, in the spirit of commercialism, we are going to
give away some FREE PASSSES>

And you win 2 free ass passes, full weekend. BOOMB!!! Much
love to the Do Lab KRU!!!!!!
:)

So i wrote this little ditty this morning, its called Laying
On The Floor. Its a true story.

last night i had an interesting experience. it was kind of an
insane experience.

I was doing as i do, when alone in the studio, i will
intermittently rise from my desk of knobs and screens and buttons
and start "dancing"... i execute some really exquisite moves,
nobody is watching, nobody is interrupting me to talk, nobody
will be hurt or offended if i don't talk back. And depending on
the music playing, i can physically experience some pretty
serious stuff.

As it happens last night i was working on this song that i
initially started writing in reverence to a dead man i read
about, who i saw a bit of myself in, and i wanted to sense the
kind of urgent moment of peaking crystalization (the final moment
of the awareness of existence) immediately before vanishing from
that plane. So i have been tampering with different melodies,
trying to play things forward and backward over each other, using
extremely demonic keys with ultra softness and dreamy warmth, but
its very frantic, and completely insane.

So i was "dancing", if you will, and if you won't then i was
twitching...more like kind of flexing all of my muscles in wierd
ways at rapid speeds, including my face and my brain and my
fingers and my everything, and i think i was sobbing but i wasnt
crying, i was just heaving...i think there was anger surging from
weird untapped oceans, and there was rage (cyclones, governments,
Budweiser Ads on the tickets to my events, the irony of feeling
so vicsiously anticorporate and living in a corporate world,
spending all my money on the demons i hate most, like Verizon,
Chevron, GE, Rupert Murdoch, etc) and there was intense joy -
like an 'unbearable lightness' - a feeling like none of that
could touch me...ME, as in my soul, it can rape my body, but it
cannot have my thoughts

And i was flexing into this, kind of a one man mosh pit, with
my eyes clenched so tight i think i was getting a headache, and
then i came to and i was on the floor.

The music was still playing, but i was laying there, kind of
crumpled. But i didnt want to get up. I pretended i was
quadrapalegic, i cant even spell that word, much less imagine
that reality, but i pretended it, then i rolled over onto my
back, and i chose not to get up for several hours.

i let myself feel all the seething stress inside of me. The
trite shit like prepping for shows, finishing albums, pleasing
your coworkers, pleasing your friends, etc. And the heavier shit
like watching as a world unravels - like having to watch someone
kill your family, while they tie your arms behind your back, and
force your eyes open. Again, not that i can truly imagine that
horror, but i know that it exists, and i know that EQUIVALENTS
exist, and regardless, it was just a metaphor anyway.

The point is i feel like each moment is so tender and so full
of potential...bursting, quivering potential, and i dont think i
ever developed the basic common sense, or adult ability to filter
that shit out, and just get shit done. That is probably why i am
not leading a normal life, and probably why i think i will live
hard and die fast.

But there i was on the floor. Thinking about all the people
who hate me. All the gossip i hear, all the shitty things i read,
all the terribly judgmental expressions of dissatisfaction that
you are basically inviting when you put yourself into the public
eye. And while i hear an item of negativity maybe once for every
hundered or more positive things, i was laying there letting them
soak in.

Realizing all i really want to do is please everyone (you
can't) and fix everything (you won't) and do it right now,
because that is just how i am.

It is intense to be riding the current of a dream you had, or
others have had, that is essentially formless and written in
alien code.

It is intense to be giving birth to something that is under a
microscope of speculation and judgement even as it is squeezing
out of you and is totally unprepared for final presentation. But
there is no final presentation. i don't think we ever make it to
that point, because we die first, which is why life can be sad,
even when it is so beautiful.

I realized that things are moving so fast, that i have grown
unable to tend to one on one relationships like i used to. I used
to make it an essential point that i basically knew EVERYONE in
the music scene, and paid them respect and attention. Kind of
never letting people just be fans, cuz i would make them my
friends. Now that time runs at 8 million times the speed, and all
16 of my selves are working overtime, i thought about how i
probably have neglected thousands of people this year, not
listening to them talk enough, not giving them enough personal
validation.

And i am so glad for that, because i am no longer interested
in making myself able to do that, i am interested in moving on,
at a rapid pace, and hoping that somewhere out there in the
brains of people exists a memory of who i really am on the
inside, where doubt and rumor cannot touch or maim, where there
is a laughing boy with a bowl cut and no shame, who wants to
share his fruit roll up with the whole class and make a beautiful
drawing.

I didn't get up because it felt good there on the floor. Had
anyone walked in on me, they would have thought i have surely
lost the plot (i think i have) but it was insanely peaceful.

it was almost like a cocoon where i recharged, and decided to
keep moving forward, letting the haters hate harder and the
lovers love deeper, and trying to reflect with greater intensity
this oddball intention i have had since before i can remember
which is to touch as many people as i can with this weird sense
of compassion and inspiration that is inside of me.

Pretty much everything i do or say can be made to sound
outrageously lame. And as i ricochet around inside this glass
ball of honesty with myself, laying like a goon on my floor, i
made a little promise to keep moving forward, maybe letting my
creative pace dictate my schedule a bit more often than the
hysterical, obsessive, manic voice in my head. i will at least
let them trade off more.

What made me get up, aside from the fact that i basically
have no ass, so laying on a floor turns to bone-against-carpet
rather quickly, was the ever present thought that we have it SO
good in this life. Most of our problems are really just part of
life. And while it is ok for them to exist, i realy just feel so
bored watching as stupid, inept, foolish adults fan the fires of
a hopeless shitstorm, taking us all with them on their poorly
designed carousel, when all the while i have had dreams of the
most ridiculous mash-up creation that is a mix of a ferris wheel,
a roller coaster, and a virtual reality machine, and even though
i am so afraid to ride it, i know its so much better than this
loopy-ass carousel of idiotic
BudweiserAdCarCommercialGasWar600$WorthlessAssTaxRebateCutEducationFundsAndHealthCareWhileCyclonesDestroyMillionsAndRenegageIdiotsTryToProfitAndFoxNewsReportsAboutBoobsAndandandandadnandandnandnandnannnnd....

First off. Wow, sold out in yer own backyard. Hi 5! It was great being a part of it.

I have to say, that was quite a show. It's been quite a ride watching Lorin go from spinning trance in Oakland warehouses to owning it onstage at the Fillmore. Congratulations. It only gets bigger and better from here on out.

I really liked the social conscious thing that kept getting thrown in over the mic. Not too preachy, not to screechy. Right on point. And! I got to meet Davey D. That guy fucking rules!

Everyone sounded great. How about Beats Antique?? Awesome. And the hip-hop. Yeya.

One thing, though, that really rocked my socks: Videolicious and Phat Conductor just slaying it with the visuals. OMG. One of the best visual shows I have EVER seen. Thanks guys!

Hats off, Lo. Keep on keeping on.

TV PRODUCER PROVES RON PAUL MEDIA BLACKOUT - PLEASE REPOST !

Television producer Jerry Day uses highly accurate online data, which is the most accurate compared to any of the polls, to prove that Ron Paul has been systematically run out of the media. It is wrong, unethical, and morally repugnant.

What should we do about it?

Camping and Shuttles at LIB!

The festival map is now posted online. Please take a good look at it, figure out where you think you'd like to camp (If you've been before and know the land) and make plans with your friends to meet up. The entire festival grounds are divided into vegetable patches to make it easier for you and your friends to find each other. Each vegetable patch has a shuttle stop so you know where you and your stuff will be dropped off.

We highly recommend taking some time now and figuring out where you'd like to be camped. It will make the entrance process that much easier for you and your friends.

Here is the map:

WITT (We're In This Together ) is gaining ground in the human mindset, at the expense of the YOYO (You're On Your Own) mentality. WITT thinking is only fully understood by the right brain, and the world needs more people conscious of the potential from the right side of every brain. Some get there via meditation, a near-death incident, or thru psychedelics, but in the case of Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor, it was a stroke. No matter what brought the experience into your life, i find it hard to describe it such a powerful way as she does in this TED video. Well worth your time.

Lorin, thank you so much for those podcast that you have put up. The Smashers and Mashers mix is nuts, the track Rage against the machine, then the murder track, then king of bongo by manu child...nasssssssssssttty. I remember you playing that murder track in asheville and the bass beat is fucking nuts. I cant get enough of these mixes! Also, is it possible to purchase any of your live shows on CD? The langerado set was nasty, as was asheville, and i would love to pay any amount to have those in my possession to rage out to when needed. Keep spreading the love and message man, youre the shit!

i was blown away w' hope by the recent decision by newyork city to ban bad oils in every restaurant. what a precedent! now all major distributors of food like Sysco and such will have to create a line of happyoil products to supply americas most famous and cosmopolitan resaurant industry. which will impact the s.a.d >standard american diet< w' rational options to the toxic oils currently the industry standard...
holy wow! : )

if you make it to this gig and i don't know you, come find me and say hello. i'll have a booth somewhere out in the field selling t-shirts and weird art and i always like to meet tribe.net people... (y'all scare me a lot less than, oh, i dunno, myspace people... :)

So Lorin, just wanted to say that the show you put on in Asheville at the Orange Peel was out of this world. It was my third time seeing you perform, Echo 2007 and Langerado 2008 being the other two, and by far it was the best. Your other shows were amazing, especially echo, the speaker problems at Langerado were no fun. Either way, the music you create, your message and how you go about spreading it, everything, is so insanely awesome! I hope to see you in person after a show sometime, was a bit too crazy at the Orange peel when i tried. Keep doing what youre doing and spreading the love!

Highway shut for butterfly travel

Taiwan is to close one lane of a major highway to protect more than a million butterflies, which cross the road on their seasonal migration.
The purple milkweed butterfly, which winters in the south of the island, passes over some 600m of motorway to reach its breeding ground in the north.
Many of the 11,500 butterflies that attempt the journey each hour do not reach safety, experts say.
Protective nets and ultra-violet lights will also be used to aid the insects.
Taiwanese officials conceded that the decision to close one lane of the road would cause some traffic congestion, but said it was a price worth paying.
"Human beings need to coexist with the other species, even if they are tiny butterflies," Lee Thay-ming, of the National Freeway Bureau, told the AFP news agency.

Kinda makes ya smile, huh?

.... Imagine a world where our government would spend $83,000 on protecting a species of butterfly that isn't even endangered...

While existing as a mutating collaborative effort, BASSNECTAR is traditionally the amorphous music project of Lorin Ashton, a San Francisco based Musician / Producer / DJ, (“probably the largest cult following of any DJ in San Francisco” – SF Weekly) highlighted by massive basslines, thick mob scene beats, freakshow energy, emotive melodics, traditional acoustic instrumentation, and fearless mashing of genres, styles, sounds, moods, and approaches. Fusing elements of midtempo breakbeats, big beat, old school hip hop and dub, DnB, glitch, IDM, electronica, death metal, grindcore, punk rock, alternative, folk, swing, and jazz; and sampling anything from the human history of sound and music, Bassnectar might be most accurately described as “omni-tempo maximalism."

Rarely will you find a talent whose vision supersedes the boundaries of genre, until you have met KING BRITT. This Philadelphia native has found a way to escape the boundaries of a single category of music by expressing his creations through deep house, hip-hop, broken beat, nu-jazz, funk and afro-tech. He has been honing his DJ and production skills for the greater part of a decade. The result: a pioneer of all things soulful, rhythmically textured and melodically provocative.

Looking for Coconut Shell Carved Earrings From Bali

Please help...
Do you know a guy who travels between SF and Bali selling coconut shell and bone carved, gauged earrings? Four years ago I bought exquisite earrings from him at the Cell Space Holiday craft fair (or whatever) and today they broke. I think his name was Jessie and at the time he traveled with a girlfriend who sold sarongs from Bali. If you can help me out, please contact me directly. I would be so thankful!

Burning Man and Sound Camps - updates of potential interest...

Last year there was an active discussion on this tribe about the question of sound camps at Burning Man, and their interface.

Burners who go to the event in large part because of the existence of dance music in all its forms and the camps that create the spaces to hear them, need to get up to speed on the latest efforts of those camps to get even modest forms of support from the BM org. (Which sadly have been mostly fruitless...)

For this to have any chance to ever change, folks need to know the score, and act accordingly.

Please check out this summary and if so moved, let your voice be heard.

This year's LoveFest, the largest electronic music parade and festival will include a three day conference featuring top music talent showcasing the latest gear and software. The organizers are seeking a motivated individual(s) to assist in hands on management of the event.

YOU should be motivated by music, be organized, be eager to learn, personable, good on the phone, able to clear your schedule for the three day conference on October 1, 2 and 3. If you have ever worked in or around a business conference, you go to the head of the line.

WE are some of the folks that bring you the largest electronic music event in North America, LoveFest. This year the parade and festival will be held on Saturday October 4th, 2008 and the lead up is a week of parties, the world's finest DJ's and a conference bringing gear manufacturers, performers, software designers and techies all together in a tree day conference on everything you need to know to be an electronic music producer, performer or promoter.

Questioning Obama

Although Obama supports net neutrality and seems like a "uniter" he may use Blackwater in Iraq after his "withdrawal."

http://www.democracynow.org/2008/2/28/jeremy_scahill_despite_anti_war_rhetoric

Also, if you wanna hear about activists chaining themselves to one of Clinton's campaign offices (over her support of the evil Peru free trade agreement [hypocrite re: NAFTA, anyone?]), how the Israelis are continuing to bomb and destroy Palestine (which Obama now supports, although I've heard (can't source where, it was either Democracy Now! or NPR) that before he ran for the senate he was pro human rights in Palestine, but now it looks like the 16 million in aid per day that we send to Israel [ source: Franti's documentary "I know I'm not alone"] will continue to flow)

http://www.switchpod.com/users/democracynow/ftp/dn2008-0228-1.mp3

It's either a particularly good or particularly depressing show, depending on whether you were gonna hold your nose and vote for a "democrat."
Someone convince me otherwise, there were a couple weeks there where I thought that I could stand Obama, but now it all just feels like empty rhetoric again. I'd love to vote for someone who could actually win, but I'm increasingly feeling that it should just get as bad as it can, as fast as it can so that we can just get the government collapse over with. And I wanna vote, because I'm tired of people saying that the youth don't care. It's our future, of course we care, it's just that we're told that "a vote for a third party candidate is a vote for a republican" when it's not. That's not what a democracy is. Voting has everything to do with demonstrating our beliefs and if we compromise our beliefs and choose the lesser of two evils then we're perpetuating the system, we're saying "to hell with voting for someone who represents me, all I wanna do is save myself from the worst of it."
And then, truly we become a nation of fear. If we're too scared to vote for a candidate who truly represents us.

I just saw bassnectar on Saturday night (Feb 15) and his set was like 90% Dub-step which I find oppressive and sad. I am so depressed that dub-step is taking over the underground scene ... I last saw Loren at B-man and he played maybe 2 dubstep peices each set ... ahh the good old days I guess.... I super depressed now. Can anyone explain to me whats so great about dub-step?

A good read that gave me a better perspective to how civil liberties are being challenged abroad. American citizens aren't the only ones losing their civil liberties, but at least in Europe the discussion seems to be much more out in the open when it comes to what the government is saying and doing about their citizen surveillance programs.

Lucent Lamour ~ from The Do LaB

First off we want to thank everyone who came out to Lucent Lamour and braved the parking, lines and other bumps in the road and helped make it an amazing event. We do want to apologize for some of those bumps and would like offer an explanation as to what happened and to let you know that we take all of the feedback very seriously as we are determined to better the quality of our events. We really care about your experience and take great care in planning so that you will have an amazing time with us.
It is well know at this point, despite all of our planning, that we found ourselves just seven days before Lucent Lamour, homeless and desperately searching the city and all of our resources for a new venue. We were very fortunate to have found one that would allow us to have multiple music areas as well as a large outdoor area for people to enjoy shows, fresh air and to get away from the music if they chose. But because we found this venue less then a week out we lost the months of planning that went into the original location. Because each venue is so unique it requires great planning not only to be able to offer the custom environments that define what we do, but to also get the logistics dialed in to where they should be so that the experience is what you have come to expect with our events.
The long wait in line was the biggest headache for all of us. We are so sorry you had to go through that! They were way to long and there was confusion as to where to go and what line you should be in and that is our fault, partially due to the last minute change in venue. Those who paid in advance should have been able to get in much faster then they did, but there was a bottleneck where all lines converged on the security i.d. point. There should not only be clearly marked lines, but there should be multiple entrances and do to regulations imposed on us by the venue, the fire marshal and the venues security we were unable to provide that. Our door staff worked very hard and did a great job in dealing with the situation that they were put in.
We also heard complaints about security in the past few days and this is something that people will complain about forever...understandably so...they are not 'us'. Security is a necessary evil in that they are there for our safety and protection but they also slow the process down and tend not to smile as much as we would like them to. They are hired by the venue who is also responsible for the bar and alcohol that is consumed and sold on their property. Serving alcohol, although extremely common, carries great risk for whoever is serving it. This is why EVERYONE is carded and if you do not have an i.d. you are refused entry. As frustrating and time consuming as this process is, it is the law and will continue to be done at our events as they are no longer renegade, underground warehouse parties. We are working on ways of creating the door where this will not be as much of a time sucker.
We have learned from our mistakes in the past when our event Lucent Delirium was shut down by the Los Angeles Fire Department. It was clear to us looking back on that event that we put people in an unsafe situation and many people pointed that out to us as well following the event. We made the decision then to no longer go around the regulations of the city but rather embrace them to ensure your safety and that people wont be left hanging in the middle of an event because it was getting busted. This, at times, is an extremely difficult, expensive and frustrating process but it is one that we will continue to do...for all of our sakes. With this comes a fire inspector who is at the venue for the duration of the event. His responsibility to us and you is to keep everyone safe. It was his decision early in the night to not allow ins and outs to the event. That was a decision that he makes the night of based on how the flow of traffic is and he made that declaration at 9:30 PM which is why you were told that if you leave the event you would have to wait in line to get back in. He also works with security in counting how many people come into the venue as to not have it overcrowded. In this case, he was very generous in this area and based his decision not on the legal number we were allowed but what he thought was a comfortable yet safe number. He also approached me when we were 300 people away from capacity. At that point we had people going through the lengthy line trying to get the people that had purchased tickets online to the front so they would not be stuck outside once max capacity was reached. We have heard it suggested that we decided to get more people in paying with cash opposed to people with pre sale tickets. The honest truth is that this really hurts us that anyone would think this...it is so far from the truth. If greed was our motivation then we would not go through the trouble and expense we do to bring all of the little magical pieces together that define our event. Instead we would open the doors to a club, turn the lights and sound on and take your money with a crooked grin on our faces. This is not who we are and never will be.
On the topic of money, this now brings us to the bar. I know the prices are high but this, most unfortunately, was out of our control. The events where we do have control of the bar the prices never exceed $6 and a portion of that goes to Sonic Muze, a non profit organization that puts art supplies and musical instruments in local needy schools. We were not afforded this luxury at the new location and the control was taken out of our hands. We did negotiate having the prices lowered from what they were originally set at.
We also want to apologize to you and our musical acts for the loss of power and sound in the peek time of event. This is something that we are embarrassed by and should never happen. We are still trying to determine the exact cause of the malfunction with the generator but we can tell you that it was not an issue with the power but rather the motor and fuel line on the generator. According to our understanding, this generator was recently serviced and is a relatively new generator. This issue should not have happened. A lot of people are putting the blame on Bassnectar and how much more power he tends to pull during his sets. This is simply not the case and we take full responsibility for this as we are the ones that rented and operated the generator. We also want to thank those who helped us remedy the problem and who left the party to go get another generator for us to use.
As I said earlier, it is always our goal to constantly better the quality of our productions and to make the next event the best event. We take great pride in our work and put in countless hours to achieve this as we strive for perfection. We will continue to produce these events and will continue to count on your support because you are the ones that add the magic that makes what we do memorable. If there is anything that has not been addressed here that you would like for us to know, please let us know.
Oh, and we put in a call to the city about too many one way streets. It'll never happen again.

With love,
The Do LaB

Steroids & Bass - Seattle, Hawaii, and Beyond

DEAR GOD.
We havent felt better in years.

It's not becaase Obama is winning the primaries, and its not because we had so much fun on the Feverdream Nyquil tour last week through Tahoe, Reno, & Los Angeles (THANKS TO YE WHO CAME OUT AND WENT WOMP!).

It's not because dates are falling into place like clockwork for the 2oo8 tour (check it!), nor because we live in a country where i can type aloud that Dick Cheney is a psychotic war criminal and should not be impeached but rather arrested for torture, mass wiretapping (FUCK YOU Verizon & AT&T), and mass murder.

(this is PRETTY MUCH AN UNMISSABLE CLIP....i cannot reccomend this more strongly:

http://www.bushflash.com/yt174.htm

And no, we are not only happy because we are so lucky to have computers and warm houses and food on the table and clean water.

No, all these things are good.

But we here at the Bassnectar LABS are EXTRA HAPPY TODAY BECAUSE:

WE ARE ON STEROIDS>

I am not joking.

We are sitting here typing to you, shirtless, blood racing, grinning foolishly. What started out as a horrible case of the flu, and a subsequent ear infection from all the airplanes, has turned into pure drugged out bliss. Take that, Roger Clemens.

So yes, as the happy steroids pulse through our veins it is with wide-eyed wonder and abandon that i bring to you:

Chapter 967 of The Womp Chronicles.
Tentatively titled Mr Smith Goes to Wompington.
But that title was scrapped by Esmerelda, our faithful editor, god bless her soul.

In Chapter 67, we join up with the WOMP as it brandishes its sexy thigh in the sky and hitches a ride up north to lovely, rainy-drenched Seattle, WA for a friday frollick of pure bass immersion (alongside LUSINE! WOOT!). Then catapulting across the pacific and donning a string of flowers (thats Haole-speak for "Lei"), The Womp shall proceed to crush freaks on The BIG ISLAND. with a pillow of days in between, we jiggle Maui on Friday, Feb 29, and womping the dickens straight out of Oahu on March First.

read on for more info

Friday, Feb 22

Hopefully the steroids will last long enough for me to cope with the fact that i am travelling to lands that were raped and stolen way less than a century ago, from defenseless locals. Lands that have been turned into the same smutfields of american consumer waste that we call The Mainland. Of Course, Hawaii is no different than the mainland, which was of course also stolen from natives, and developed by slaves from around the world...crafted into the perfect mirage of democracy masking the same fucking monarchic structures of wealth and power that have always existed, and will continue to exist as long as our primate membranes dominate our impulses.

butt eye die gress.

must be the roids.

check tickets.bassnectar.net for ticket info on maui and oahu, or we'll hitcha up nexxxt week wit dee details.

although next week, we shant be on steroids, so who nose what will happen.

much love
Lorin Clemens.

PS...check the schedule for the new 2008 dates in April. its gonna be pretty slammed. second 2 weeks coming in the next few days for NYC, Chicago, Madison, and possibly Montreal, Lawrence, Detroit, and others. ....Also announcing the big one in SF:
Bassnectar @ The Fillmore in SF, May 17! Cheap tickets will go on sale soon, ill send info.

WOMP!
longest DJ set you have ever played?

I was just asking this of Adam.... I am not saying I was any good (I think I dropped some awesome stuff my residency doesn't give me the chance to)

The other night I played a 9 hour dj set at a big house party in Hunter's Point.

Basically 3 mini sets... 8-12, 12-3, 3-5.

It was so much fun. I wasn't even altered (not because I would be, but that is the first question or comment I would get), but it was like a progressive party and new people kept coming. I was even able to sneak a couple of my faves back into the rotation on the back end.

Anyhoo... this is stupid, but I was wondering... you and other DJ's have to talk about long sets???

What is the longest you have heard of?

STORIES STORIES I WANT STORIES!!!!!

You got a mode of transportation that you drive around on the regular?? If so, what is it... and does it have some kick in the system?? : )

I heard once that tipper had the loudest audio system in a car in the world......seems crazy, but after seeing him at zero ground I wouldn't be too surprised...
ARE YOU READY!!??! ok, lets go!

First, come across a full length version of unreleased music. Mix that up with some excitement.
Next, rip that music to your computer. Mix that up with a few doses of technical savy.
Now toss it in the oven and set to bake.
Remove and put up the music for FREE download on some file sharing programs.
Send links to your friends.
(careful becuase some people will hear about this, and just go do some basic searches on their own, and they too will find it!)

...next, send out some emails telling people about the album being available for FREE.
Mix that up with playing it at parties, and burning it for friends.

And PRESTO!!!! You've potentially ruined someone's career!

So a word to the wise friends, in the age of entitlement and A.D.D., if yu enjoy music, SUPPORT the musicians, go without a lattee for 3 days and save your 15$ for their CD. DONT burn it and DONT download it for free. Dont support people who do, and spread the word.

Its one thing to illegally distribute someone's OLD music, but whoever thought it was cool in any way to post those links up and offer my brand new, unreleased, 3-year-in-the-making record for free, did something VERY wrong. As for the several hundered people who i KNOW downloaded it.

Shame On You in a deep way.

Let me break down the conundrum:

A record label MUST get press to support their release.

Press needs a full copy of the release 3-4 months in advance for adqueate coverage.

Press does NOT want clips or samples, they want the FINAL CD for review.

So when OM RECORDS sent out 400 select copies to press around the world, somehow, somewhere, someone took one of those copies and not only stole it but PUT IT UP FOR FREE DOWNLOAD!!!!!!!!

And the album isnt even out yet.

This kind of action can result in the creative death of an artist.

Let me say this is not about me making money.

I dont want to sell units to cash in, get rich, and sip bichz and roll 'roun inna benz. or whatever.

I want my LABEL to sell units, so that it is worth it for them to invest more time, energy and money into promoting, circulating, distributing and SUPPORTING my art (and the messages inside my art) worldwide.

So by simply buying a CD for yourself, or buying it for a friend, its not "Oh cool, im giving some cash to Lorin, who i like to support"...cuz if that was the case, id be taking donations for personal money.

Its about supporting this dope label OM, which has been working with me doing back breaking work for a year to make this release huge, so that it can be a springboard for the NEXT release, and the one after that, as well as what we are hoping will be a new Bassnectar record label, and lots of other stuff in the works.

PLEASE DONT STEAL MY MUSIC>
PLEASE DONT STEAL OTHER PEOPLE'S MUSIC
PLEASE DONT LET OTHER PEOPLE STEAL MY MUSIC (it hurt so bad to look online and see my own friends had downloaded the cd!)
IF YOU DONT LIKE ME OR MY MUSIC, thats fine, just leave me alone.
IF YOU DO: SUPPORT.

that means if you DO burn someone's CD, and you like it:
find them on myspace, or the web, write them a letter, send them a donation, offer to help the record label with street team or promo when the artist tours, line them up a gig, or USE YOUR OWN ADULT BRAIN to figure out how to support, but dont just go around sucking people's life force.

im serious. i dont wish to preach or bich... i wish to educate first hand so you understand HOW IT FEELS TO BE ME.

well first off, it feels great, i am constantly meditating on things that are going well in life, and loving the spring weather, and feeling soo inspired to do the work i am on this planet to do!
:)
FULLY!

but, i gotta call a spade a spade.

And that goes for DJS, in 2007, putting out mixes digitally or on CD with their name on it, but no tracklisting...come on folks, support.

I would rather not waste precious bandwidth of your attention span on trivial matters like this, when there is so much more going on.

but my career is in jeopardy if people don't support.

And the careers of thousands of mindblowing artists who are alive right now and probably in their studios working, think about them, send them a prayer, and show them your love.

not just now, but from now on.

NOTE: this applies to all artists you like. and anything you like. VOTE WITH YOUR DOLLAR.
And in reference to file sharing and CD Burning PLEASE dont think i am hypocritically judging anyone.

i mean come on, its 2007, i am realistic. i have burned CDs, i have traded music, etc. On one hand, i feel more justified because i am in the bizness, and i support artists so much. But on the other hand, as i have grown, i have understood how sensitive this issue is, and how fundamentally dangerous it is to creativity (and all that creativity brings: inspiration, emotional health, social change, new thought, empowerment) for piracy to become normal. Not only has is stopped being a personal practice of mine, but i feel obligated to voice this all publicly.

THINK ABOUT IT NEXT TIME YOU DO IT.

You want that music cuz it feels so good.

Well if it feels so good, its probably is good, and its worth your support.

And if you cant afford it, then wait till you can and enjoy it that much more.

Support artists.

Im open for discussion, hit me.

It's about time. They have suffered long enough. We have third world living conditions right here in the Heartland of the United States, smack dab in the heart of so many native reservations. Lakotah men suffer from the lowest life expectancy in the world (not including AIDS fatalities). Lakotah death rates are the highest in the US. The list goes on and on...Click the "WHY" link on their website.

So a friend or two and I are planning on going to Tahoe to see the show and get a condo or timeshare rental thing for a few days before to get some of this awesome record breaking snow. Is anyone else planning on going up there? Is anyone interested in getting a spot nearby or sharing a couple rooms or even going out one night while we are there? We are thinking of going to North Star or someplace near there for the snow fun. It could be cool to have a little after hours after the show. We got some good music and dj's with us. Nothing too wild mind you:)
Any feedback? Maybe even just a group on the snow all going that night to see the show would be lots of fun:) Take care, y'all

Reznor, Niggy Tardust, demographics, art and commerce, labels, and useful info for everyone

This a lot of info. This is about the nature and state of the music business. First I will post Trent's stuff, then Saul's stuff. This is fascinating...
==============

Taken from nin.com on January 3rd, 2008:

It's a strange time to be an artist in the recording business. It's pretty easy to see what NOT to do these days, but less obvious to know what's right. As I find myself free from the bloated bureaucracy of major labels, finally able to do whatever I want... well, what is that? What is the "right" way to release records, treat your music and your audience with respect and attempt to make a living as well? I have a number of musician friends who are either in a similar situation or feel they soon will be, and it's a real source of anxiety and uncertainty.
I'd like to share my experience releasing Saul Williams' "The Inevitable Rise and Liberation of NiggyTardust" and what I've learned from the process. Perhaps by revealing of all our data - our "dirty laundry" - we can contribute to a better solution.

A quick history: Saul makes a great record that I produce. We can't find the right home at a major label. We decide to release it ourselves, digitally. Saul does not have limitless financial resources so we shop around for a company that can fulfill our needs. We choose Musicane because they are competent and are willing to adapt to what we want. The results are here: niggytardust.com

We offer the entire record free (as in totally free to the visitor - we pay bandwidth costs) as 192 MP3s, or for $5 you can choose higher fidelity versions and feel good about supporting the artist directly. We offer all major CCs and PayPal as payment options.
Here's what I was thinking: Fans are interested in music as soon as it's available (that's a good thing, remember) and usually that's a leak from the label's manufacturing plants. Offering the record digitally as its first appearance in the marketplace eliminates that problem. I thought if you offered the whole record free at reasonable quality - no strings attached - and offered a hassle free way to show support that clearly goes straight to the artists who made it at an unquestionably low price people would "do the right thing". I know, I know...
Well, now I DO know and you will too.

Saul's previous record was released in 2004 and has sold 33,897 copies.

As of 1/2/08,
154,449 people chose to download Saul's new record.
28,322 of those people chose to pay $5 for it, meaning:
&
