Re: a new zeitgeist film - addendum
Fri, November 14, 2008 - 8:17 PMI always haveta take these things in small doses. I take notes when I actually want to learn from these types of films, so the going is sloooow 'cause tis so dense.
I've gotten through the first 25 min and damn, I wanna mosey on down to my nice little community credit union and demand my money so I can shove it in a pickle jar n bury it... The economy is a very difficult topic to make simple, but I think that they may have oversimplified it, things need to be explained a bit more thoroughly, not just half-explained half-preached. I kept stopping and re-listening, I feel like a lot of explanatory info has been left out for the sake of a fast-proven point. It really gives you a different experience if you listen and take notes with the intention of being able to explain (both to yourself and others) what this film is teaching.
I also could just be particularly dense due to tiredness. A certain dashing half-bearded (half yeti?) DJ happened into town last night...
Further reactions in due time, I'm thinking about writing a minispeech thingy on some of this so that I can more easily share it.
Whatchu thinkin'? -

Re: a new zeitgeist film - addendum
Wed, November 19, 2008 - 11:50 PMI tend to find zeitgeist to be mostly fear mongling. While I have entirely leftist leanings I do not appreciate in any way media enhanced fear mongling from either side of the spectrum. There is a distinct difference I believe between biased propoganda and a simple presentation of the facts -

I was especially struck by the comment that "we are all slaves"
I personally hardly feel like a slave - I feel privileged given the average world situation as I think the majority of americans are. No denying that lots of people even in America are hard up, but we are hardly slaves. (it seems even insulting to those in our history who have truely been slaves)
The FED and monitary policy are fascinating but I don't think this film really does justice to the subject and I don't think anyone really understands the best methods to use in market regulation.
Sounds like Herbert Hoover's attempts at staying out of helping the markets and people after the depression were a dismal success. Now we are swinging the opposite way - maybe too far. Only time will tell.
Generally open balanced discussion will go alot farther than screaming and yelling even if many attrocious policy decisioins have already been made.
