BRAND SPANKIN' NEW- interview for Q3 in Australia...
Thu, January 8, 2009 - 9:57 PM1) 'Omnitempo maximalism' sounds like fun. Can you tell us a little about this and is this what can we expect from your sets when you get here?
======================================
It basically means all sounds and all styles of music; any or all tempo ranges, combined into a freeform state of existence without rules or limitations.
Everything plus the kitchen sync, although i prefer to make things thicker and heavier than normal wherever possible. I am just less concerned about following a format, and more interested in mutating and combining anything that exists as sound into a kind of sonic syrup that can be bathed in, swam in, swallowed, surfed, slathered, or shared.
======================================
2) Your sets are renowned for being eclectic. What sounds currently move you the most? What is currently on high rotation in your sets?
======================================
Anything heavy and wobbling.... the usual suspects of Dubstep, DnB, Hip Hop, Glitch, Mashed up Nonsense, whatever. Hoestly "genres" bother me because they are restricting, and there is something GOOD in any genre of anything. I like visiting old eras, cultures and genres, and combining them with heaviness in the form of sub-bass and ridiculous drums. In the states, the festival circuit goes bananas for creative "remixes" so i will happily take any song and throw it into the pot, wether its Manu Chao, Barrington Levy, Metallica, NIN, The Fugees, Dead Prez, Slayer, The Beatles, etc etc.... old circus music, vaudeville, turn of the century sounds...i love it all.
======================================
5) I am curious to know what you make of an act like Girl Talk. Do you think that this kind of kaleidoscopic approach where anything can be manipulated and mixed represents the future of DJing?
======================================
Sure, i have always taken that kind of approach to music...even when i was a kid.
Everyone does things uniquely...where Girl Talk seems to mostly take pop music and mash it up, and Z-Trip seems to take mostly rock or hip hop and mash it up, i am pretty much open to take ANYTHING and mash it up if it feels right... Frank Sinatra, surf fock, the sound of a really wild sneeze....
just spend some time finding the right matching elements, and turn the Heaviness Knob to maximum.
======================================
6) Which DJs have provided inspiration and influenced your work? I read that you are a fan of Si Begg...what is he doing these days?
======================================
He is insane.
i am so in love with his genius art. same goes for tipper.
and a load of artists really... i am pretty involved in music i guess, so it is hard to write succinctly about who inspires me. Because ANYTHING inspires me if it's good! Mr Oizo, Mr Scruff, Mr Rogers.
I am also pretty inspired by non musical things like earthquakes, fear, and juice.
======================================
7) Do you edit much of what you play? Does this account for the distinctive sound of your sets? Do you put a lot of time into your edits?
======================================
Absolutely.
That has been a must since day one, but now that i use Ableton things can get more customized or unique because there are sections of live-remix or live-layering that get super bezerk.
======================================
8) Do you play a lot of your own tunes in your sets?
======================================
Yes.
But i play a lot of sets...some of which are 100% original, some of which are mostly a DJ set, with a few of my own creations in it. Some of my sets are half live sonic freakshow, half dance-party-with-myself while i play my favorite songs.
======================================
9) I notice that you have have put out a couple of albums and done quite a few remixes but no mix CDs. Is that a deliberate move on your part?
======================================
I've got lots of mix CDs from back in the day, and i have some mixes up at bassnectar.net/podcast
10) What can we expect from you in 2009 on the release front?
======================================
I am asking myself the same question.
I am sitting on 100+ pieces of unreleased sonic matter.
One song in particular will be out soon called Art Of Revolution, with remixes from Diplo, Ghislain Poirier, 6Blocc, and Product 01.
11) I read that you play about 150 shows a year. Do you enjoy life on the road? After a while is it more about the party or the music? How do you find time to work on your own productions with such a hectic schedule?
======================================
I try to enjoy life on and off the road. It seems to pass by so quickly and what i enjoy most about it is falling deeper into it. I seem to express and experience depth best when i pay attention, so i try and do that a lot. But then again some magic happens when you stop paying attention and go into auto-pilot, so it helps if you find a friend to walk around ahead of you and shout wildly if you are about to collide with a tree or something. That frees you up to kind of "go with the flow"...
======================================
13) You did that track with FreQ Nasty for Tibet. Do you think that underground artists can make a difference on big and political issues such as this?
======================================
For me it is crucial. I would rather spend less time wondering if i can make a difference and just leap headfirst in.
:)
======================================
14) Whats the mood in America like right now in light of the economic crisis and with President elect Obama about to be signed in?
======================================
I am not sure... i would say the mood SHOULD be outrage and frustration at a continued pattern of plutocracy that siphons money from the middle class into the upper class. The 700 billion dollar bailout is like this:
There is a ship. Its called America. That ship is on fire. And it is sinking. And the government stops the ship, and steals AS MUCH MONEY AS POSSIBLE before it sinks and gives it to the upper class so they can fund their media, which controls people's minds, and their military, which controls everything else.
but that is pretty much the same system anywhere humans are involved, sadly.

Re: BRAND SPANKIN' NEW- interview for Q3 in Australia...
Fri, January 9, 2009 - 9:04 AMmhmm, tribe... because I really did post that twice just for effect and leave out the last part, which goes a little something like this...
Obama offers hope in that he seems more fair, diplomatic, direct and genuine than George Bush. But he is still a very crafty politician, and i have yet to see how much his actions really will match his words.
Which only inspires me more... life really is just an open ended invitation to dive in, however deeply you want...
Sometimes i dive headfirst, sometimes sideways, but always with a lot of empathy and force and it is more important than ever to use that force to strengthen grass roots networks of underground communication and action.
